Know anyone waiting in line for an iPhone right now?
Are you waiting in line for an iPhone right now? Do you know anyone who is? I know of a couple friends who plans to head down to the Apple store after work, but I don't know of any friends/colleagues who are currently standing in line. I have not checked (in fact I have not been outside today), but I would guess that the lines around here (somewhere between Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio) are not nearly as long as the lines in NYC, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta, etc . I wouldn't be surprised...

Restoring large SQL Server databases
Restoring large SQL Server databases
When restoring a large SQL Server database (double-digit GBs) insure that the backup file is not on the same physical drive that your data file will reside. Having them on the same drive seems to slow down the restore process 10 fold. That number is pulled from thin air based on visual-only observation - YMMV. Today marks the third time I have learned that lesson. The first time I thought I must have just been doing something wrong or one of the drives must have been much slower than it should have...
New Hard Drive Follies
New Hard Drive Follies
I decided yesterday that I needed to add a new hard drive to my workstation. On all past computers I would keep a large C: drive for system, program files, etc. and keep a very large D: drive for data (pst files, code, databases, desktop & "my documents", and other general crap). This seemed to work well and when it was time to move to the next computer all I really needed to migrate was the stuff from the data drive. This made it easy to do backups as well - everything was in one place. My new...
Late night IM session
Late night IM session
(This was from a couple of weeks ago and I forgot to post it. It is just as relevant now as it was then, though) When you're on an IM with Scott Water and Scott Forsyth (Orcs Web) at 2:45 AM you know something is not quite right. All you can do is pray that it wasn't you who screwed things up. Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | kick it! | live it!

Scott Cate to Ohio - MVP
Scott Cate to Ohio - MVP
I just returned home from a special edition of the Dayton .NET Dev Group . The presentation tonight was INETA speaker, Scott Cate , talking about the MVP (Model-View-Presenter) pattern. Scott is a fantastic speaker and a heck of a guy to boot. Lately, I had been looking at the MVP pattern in general and the Castle project specifically. Scott's presentation really helped to tie things together for me. Call to action for Ohio .NET developers in Cincinnati, Columbus and Toledo and nearby cities - get...

Follow up on forums, weblogs, and www.asp.net rollout
As previously promised we have put together a little description of the problems we had with the rollout of the redesigned forums.asp.net , weblogs.asp.net and www.asp.net sites on May 16th. You can find the details in this post on forums.asp.net . We've learned quite a bit from the experience, hopefully you can, too. A picture from a former life
A picture from a former life
I found this picture a couple of days ago while looking through an old computer for files I needed to copy off of it before repaving and repurposing. This is one of the very few pictures I have of myself from my Army days. This was taken sometime during 1994. We were at the Marine base in San Diego training at their MOUT city (Military Operations in Urban Terrain). I remember it was hot, hot, hot and we were spending our time in cinder-blog buildings and crawling around in tunnels under the city...

Chameleon is BadAss!
Chameleon is BadAss!
I've spent some time over the last couple of months working with Chameleon, the new theming engine introduced in Community Server 2007 . I was highly confused at first, even after reading Ben's great blog series, Introduction to Chameleon . However, after digging in and working with it the info from the introduction started making sense. I started seeing examples in the code that reminded me of the things I had previously read. By now many of you CS Community members are starting to get your hands...
Happy Telligent Anniversary, too
Happy Telligent Anniversary, too
I almost forgot until I read Kevin's post that today is Telligent's 3rd anniversary. I remember the day I first read about the forming of Telligent and about Community Server . That was a special day for me because on that day, 3 years ago, I knew I wanted to be a Telligenti . Since that time I have followed the news and the blogs of every Telligenti that I could find. (It seems that I missed Rob's post about the Telligent anniversary that Kevin linked to. Rob also links to his original post where...

As Terri mentioned in the most recent post , we will be doing a big RAM upgrade tonight and the site may be down for about 15 minutes starting at 1:15AM EST. I apologize for any inconvenience beforehand, but it will truly be worth it. Share this post...
My new favorite blog, the Cavs, and other stuff
My new favorite blog, the Cavs, and other stuff
First, hats off to Lebron James - he single-handedly carried the Cavaliers in the fourth quarter and overtime tonight. Truly amazing performance. I haven't seen a performance like that since ... well, I hate to say it, but ... since MJ did that in many memorable playoff games for the Bulls. He's no MJ, but the comparisons have been coming in for a while and they're starting to have some validity. Keep up the good work kid! You might turn me into a Cavs fan yet. Michael Vick, I hope all the recent...
